Statement on James Comey

Former FBI Director James Comey lays out a convincing case for why Donald Trump is unfit to be President on moral grounds alone. Laying aside policy or political differences, he asks the country to go beyond these and consider higher values:

“A person who sees moral equivalence in Charlottesville, who talks about and treats women like they’re pieces of meat, who lies constantly about matters big and small and insists the American people believe it, that person is not fit to be President of the United States on moral grounds…

“…our president must embody respect and adhere to the values that are at the core of this country. The most important being truth. This President is not able to do that…”

We believe Mr. Comey is speaking to the nation in the best tradition of the Old Testament prophets who warned, “Woe to the complacent in Zion, lying upon beds of ivory,” (Amos 6:1); “You brood of vipers, how can you who are evil say anything good? For the mouth speaks what the heart is full of,” (Mt. 12:34).

Watching Mr. Comey being called names (“slimeball’) and threatened (jail) by Trump and his allies adds to his credibility.

We urge all Americans to consider his words carefully and pray that higher standards of behavior and truth be restored to our civic and political discourse. Moral values count.
